FOOTBALL DISTINCTION

“HARD” AMD “ROUGH” FLAY The difference between “hard” and “rough” play was stressed by Mr. J. Moffitt, the newly-elected president of the Wellington Rugby Referees’ Association, in his inaugural address at the annual general meeting this week. He said that the two styles were often confused by the unthinking, but there was really a great deal of difference. He had visited quite a number of different places last season and had seen somo of the principal games played in the chief centres and he was convinced that rough play had almost entirely disappeared in New Zealand, and he was certain that it was non-existent in Wellington. At the same time he was beginning to think that hard play was not encouraged nearly enough, certainly so far as Wellington is concerned. One must not confuse hard play with dirty or rough play, he said, for there was a great deal of difference. Referees and the public sometimes confuse the two. with the consequence that the player suffers, but he thought the time had arrived when followers of the game should realise the difference. *
