Really I can't see the necesThis was the reply of the Mayor of Auckland, Mr. George Baildon, when asked by a deputation from Mangere to arrange a civic reception for the airmen, Messrs. Piper and Kay, who have flown from England to Australia under conditions of great stress and unusual hardship. Kay is an Aucklander and his relatives live at Mangere. The Mayor’s answer comes as an unexpected blow to a committee that was arranging to receive the two airmen. “I can’t understand the Mayor turning us down,” said Mr. S. Rickards, a committee member, this morning. “Of course, it is not too late for him to change his mind. In Wellington Mr. Chichester, who is not a New Zealander, was given a great reception. “If Piper and Kay are not entitled to a civic reception, I don’t know who is,” said Mr. S. W. House, another committeeman.
