“THESE FOUL DRYS”
NOISY DEBATE ON LIQUOR IN U.S.A. SENATE SMELL RUM, BUT NOT OIL NEW YORK, March 31. Mr. Clarence Darrow, the noted criminal lawyer, and Senator Brookhart, of lowa, clashed in a noisy debate on prohibition. “Methodist prohibitionists have worried so much about the Pope coming to America that they have beaten him to it,” declared Mr. Darrow. “They have set themselves up across the street from the nation’s eapitol, where they can argue with weakkneed Senators, and weak-minded Congressmen. “These foul ‘drys’ can smell rum, but can’t smell oil, as shown in the Teapot Dome scandal.” Senator Brookhart, in reply, said that the country would soon see the day when drink was not to be found. Mr. Josephus Daniels (former Secretary for the Navy) thinks 100 years not too long to give a fair trial to find out whether prohibition is a success.
