AIRPORT WANTED
AGITATION RENEWED ADVANTAGES OF MANGERE In spite of advice from the Minister of Internal Affairs that the property owned by the Otahuhu Trotting Club ia not considered suitable for an airport for Auckland, it was decided at a meeting of the Mahgere East Ratepayers Association to press the claims of the district still further. A deputation consisting of Mr. S. .T. E. Closey, Dr. A. B. Jameson and Mr. H. C. Ernest, representing the Papatoetoe Chamber of Commerce and Papatoetoe Welfare League, waited on the association and asked for its support in advocating the purchase of the trotting club site for an airport. Mr. Closey outlined the essential requirements of an airport, and explained the advantages of the site at Mangere crossing in preference to any other site near Auckland. Geographically, Mangere was admirably suited for an airport. Mr. J. Sommers pointed out that it was not the front portion of the property that was for sale, but approximately 100 acres at the rear. This was considered quite suitable for an airport, and there were no causes for objection. The latter site was suitable for a seaplane base, as the upper reaches of the Manukau Harbour could be easily impounded at a comparatively small cost. It was resolved to communicate these facts to the authorities concerned. A committee consisting of Messrs. Closev. Ernest, Wakefield and Trayes. J. Clark. It. Prangley, D. Kay, J. Sommers. W. R. Knight. S. W. House and Rickards was appointed to advance the claims of Mangere Crossing as a site for an airport. The Otahuhu Rorough Council is to be invited to appoint representatives to act with the committee.
