FUNERAL OF VICTIMS CROWDS LINE STREETS From Our Own Correspondent WHANGAREI, Today. Four of the six victims of the levelcrossing smash at McLeod’s Flat on Saturday evening were buried in the Kauri Cemetery today. All business premises were closed and the Hikurangi mines ceased work. The streets were crowded until the funeral left the town at 2 p.m. The funeral of the four young men, A. Frew, S. Johnson, .G. Davidson and J. Rothwell,. was taken charge of by the Miners’ Union. At 2 p.m. the large stream of cars began to pour out of Hikurangi and the head of the procession reached a point over a mile and a-half along the road before the last cars began to move off. Approximately 200 cars travelled to tire cemetery and 1,500 mourners stood at the grave-side, where prayers were also said for those in hospital. Representatives of the Whangarei Harbour Board, Borough and County Councils, Hikurangi Town Board and Chamber of Commerce, and many sports bodies were present.
