Rugby enthusiasts witnessed an excellent game for the opening match of the season in Taupiri on Saturday last, when Hamilton defeated Taupiri by 6 points to 0. Both teams were without several of their best players, but the play was nevertheless exceedingly good. On many occasions play alternated from one end of the field to the other with great rapidity. Hamilton’s back division overshadowed that of Taupiri, which showed an inclination to hold off, while Hamilton was faster and showed more cohesion. Two sparkling rushes by Hamilton’s backs resulted in tries neither of which was converted. Taupiri was on the very verge of scoring upon numerous occasions, but overkeenness caused these chances to be missed. Taupiri’s scrum work was not equal to that of Hamilton, which secured the ball from the scrum three out of four times. Taupiri’s forwards, however, appear better than last year’s. All thins considered, all played well, leaving little room to individualise. With practice Taupiri should do well in the coming season.
