Wanganui Trots
LARGE FIELDS ENGAGED
All Red’s Cup Prospects
TIIE annual carnival of the Wanganui Trotting Club opens tomorrow and will reach finality on Saturday. With ]ar;?e fields and good material in the principal events, the. fixture promises to be the most successful yet staged bv the River City light-harness enthusiasts.
have had such a hard struggle for existence as the Wanganui Club, but by dint of perseverance the management has kept afloat. The tide turned favourably last year, when a highly successful meeting was recorded. The pood, keen and clean sport witnessed on that occasion gave the game a big lift along, and the success of that venture is now reflected in the fine fields booked to parade tomorrow. A review of the card by “Abaydos” Is appeneded: —• Innovation Handicap Seventeen of the 23 runners figure on the front of the novice heat, and in the ranks are many aspirants making their public debut. With so many unknown quantities backers will find it difficult to make a selection, but will rely upon some of the beter known lot. Of the limit brigade, Capilano gave promise when seen out at Hastings, while last year Lee Nelson threatened to make good. Tiny Rose has prospects. but claims a later engagement. Victor Kyle and Huia Maid look the pick of the remainder, but favourites may be Capilano and Lee Nelson. Kirkwood Handicap The trotters in this event are of moderate calibre. Two to appeal on the front are Windchat, which shaped pleasantly at Hamilton, and the Corrigan representative, Finoro. which WRS placed at Ashhurst and Hastings, joy Ride may have a chance, also Further back Pilot is a useful sort, but he m*iy b© reserved for the longer journey. Ockley Wood can go quick but he, too, has another engagement. Peter Eyre is a solid customer, but the public may rely on the limit pair. Windchat and Finoro. Eastbrook Handicap Another big field will face the starter here. Hone Heke will 'be dangerous i iff the end. and Harold Logan is a possibility. Highland Derby showed godo form at Hastings, while, if ready, Baron Derby’ will take a power of stopping. Roldena is well placed and should go a solid race, and Sister Chris; should find the company congenial. Bonniewah has plenty of speed, but is patchy’. Richmond Lass is consistent if unlucky, but Rangihou is a good sort. He is a doubtful starter on hard tracks. If Rangihou is absent, the favourites may be Baron Derby and Hone Heke. Wanganui Cup The largest field that has ever contested this event is billed to appear, while tho society, generally speaking, is pretty good. Of the end lot Chrystal. Bingen Spiers. Glenrossie and Llghtwood hold the best prospects, but they will be overshadowed by Gumdigger, if ho elects to tackle this contest. Great Author is a solid pacer.
and this factor may give him preference over Lady Author, who is speedy. Sailor Boy is overdue, and Warrenore has recent form on his side. But on the 48 yards mark is a warm lot in AH Red, Logan’s Pride. Some Dillon, Native Hero and Sir Guv. Quite An « the winner is concealed here. All Red, Logan’s Pride and Some Dillon are recent winners over two miles, while Sir Guy and Native Hero have won over a shorter journey, but can stay on well. It does not look like anything farther back being handy. In a good pool fancies may lean toward All Red, Gumdigger (if started), or Logan's Pride. Foster’s Handicap Here come the saddle merchants, and an awkward squad they present. Few of them have much form of any consequence, excepting Good Lady, which won a double at Hastings on the final day. She is also in the 10furlong later. If started in the saddle heat she would give those in front of her a fright. Of the limit brigade Tiny Rose will find support, and Tawa King should have friends. Pumakaha, an old square, is always dangerous in a race of this description, and Roldena should be at home on a 2.24 mark. Should Good Lady decline her engagement. best backed may be Tiny Rose and Roldena. President’s Handicap Square-gaiters of better calibre will tackle the two-mile event, and of the limit contingent the most hopeful candidate is Ockley Wood. If he can stay, then look out. On a handy mark is Pilot, and his essays at Hastings point to the Peterwah horse being the hardest to beat. Brian Bingen is speedy and may go better for Harry Garnett, while Bessie Bingen is a trotter possessing marked ability when O.K. Rangitero and Peter Eyre are of the solid type, and will be knocking at the finish. Eva Reta can trot fast, while the Coaster, Olive Nelson, is full of promise, but. like Miss Leda, has a big contract in front of her. The favourites may be Pilot and Bessie Bingen. Morton Memorial Handicap A nice field of sprinters will parade for tho final heat of the day, and Lightwood, off the end, will command respect. Kevinbrao is usefu-l, but on Hastings form Good Lady should have it on the front lot. Then Gumdigger has a royal chance, and if reserved for this item would give the opposition some hurry up. Warrenore is a form horso and sure to run a solid race, while the back-marker. Sir Guy, is such a bulldog finisher he must be kept on-side. When a final selection is made Gumdigger, if reserved, will be favourite, but, if absent, most support will be for Good Lady and Warrenore.
