MUNICIPAL BAND
ENJOYABLE CONCERT GIVEN The Municipal Band, under *conductorship of Mr. Christopher SmitL assisted by Miss Alma McGruer as vocalist, presented a most enjoyabk concert in the Town Hall on Saturday evening. A well-balanced programme f our.l appreciation by the large audience The bandmaster introduced numbers not previously heard by Aucklanders in concerts of the City Band. A marc : is always popular and Paul Linske> festal composition “Father Rhine” was well received. Other new selections were French in theme, “Si j’etais Roi by' Adolph Adam, and “Valse Triste, from the pen of Jean Sibelius. The dominant numbers were, however, excerpts from grand opera. “Faust” and “Rienzi” being th selected operas. Beginning with the stirring music of the “Chorale des Epees,” the “Fausr selection proceeded to first the mor leisureLy and reflective movement in “Laisse Moi Contempler,” which gave place in turn to “Salut! O Mon Denier Matin,” and “O Xuit d’Amou* The finale, “Gloria Immortelle.” can.in vibrant exultation. The scheme ocontrast was well carried out and attention held throughout. “Rienzi” ? ' also well interpreted. The selection included “Yes, Peace We Found o r All the Land,” and “Almighty Fatbe:. King of Kings.” . Miss McGruer received hearty ap plause by her singing of two sokkShe sang “Pastoral,” by Carey, * the “Lass With the Delicate A>(Arne). She gave as an encore 1 - popular “Cuckoo Song.” . Instrumentalists who were attractive solos were Mr. t. cornet, and Mr. H. C. McLennan. . ;U They played respectively "De 7th Air Vaire” (Hartmann) and der Ohne Worte.”
