DESCENT BY PARACHUTE
EVENT FOR AIR PAGEANT NOTES FROM THE AIRDROME A parachute descent by Captain \ Jonnasen, of Thames, will take place {' at the Auckland Aero Club’s pageant next Saturday. Such events, which are a feature of the air displays in Eng* land, have not been attempted to any extent in New Zealand, and at the pageant last year the Government refused to permit a parachute descent. An airplane will fly at a speed ranging between 70 and 80 miles an hour, when Mr. Jonnasen will make a jump from it. In order that no part of the machine will come in contact with him he will leave the cockpit while the plane is in flight, and climb down to the under-carriage, from which he will release himself. Entries have been received for the inter-club event at the pageant, the competing clubs and representatives being as follow:—Canterbury, Mr. D. B. Grigg; Marlborough, Miss P. Bennett; Hawke’s Bay and East Coast, Mr. D. H. Newbegin; Auckland, Mr. G. M. Firth. PLANES RETURN The four Aero Club machines which have been visiting the Hawke’s Bay Aero Club’s pageant, returned to the Mangere Airdrome yesterday afternoon. Ideal weather prevailed for the return trip, which was made in 3 hours 30 minutes actual flying time. Two stops were made en route. VISIT OF KAY AND PIPER Flying-Officers C. Kay and IT. L. Piper, the two New Zealand airmen who recently flew from England to Australia, are expected to arrive in the Dominion next week. According to information which was received yesterday by the parents of Mr. Kay, who five at Mangere, both airmen will leave Sydney on Friday by the Ulimaroa, which is due at Auckland next Tuesoay morning. It is not yet known whether the airmen will bring with them the De Soutter airplane in which they made the notable flight.
