Easter At Ellerslie
CLASS FIELDS REVIEWED
The Popular Double Event
Promptly to time Mr. F. J. Me- | Manemin produced the handicaps for the Auckland Racing Club’s autumn meeting on Easter Saturday and Monday. Of course, most interest was taken in the adjustments for the Easter Handicap, easily the most A*aluable race to be run in the Dominion at the many holiday meetings that Avill be in progress next Aveek. In placing Pegaway at the head of the list Mr. McManemin fulfilled general expectations, for the majority of , sportsmen in touch Avith the sport j recognise that Pegaway is entitled to | the honour of being the best miler in | the Dominion. At 9.5 Pegaway is not out of the ter of weight and has the speed neces- j sary to got an early position in the i best of fields. In the President’s llan- j dicap. run the same day, the Lucullus ! gelding figures on the same mark as j Historic and Star Stranger. A pound bcloAv is Paganelli and he, •, too, is nicely placed. He Avon the Thompson Handicap just over 12 months ago Avith 5.12, over the same journey, and despite his weight-l'or-age defeats it cannot be said that lie has gone off. However, Paganelli an ill liave to serA'e up his best form if fie is to beat this field at the Aveiglits. Perhaps his owners xvill prefer to tak* on the Feilding trip, for the Lord Quex gelding is not at all badly treated in the Manchester Gold Cup with 8.9, even allowing for the mile and a-quar-ter to be traversed, and then there is the shorter journey the second day. Paganelli may be kept here, but all 1 the same he has receded a pretty good invitation to go South. Toxeuma’s Chance Toxcuma is a brilliant fellow over a mile. His last outing Avas in the Manawatu Stakes and it appeared as if lie Avas a bit unlucky to miss first money. He is engaged in the Ormond Gold Cup at Hastings next Saturday and he ought to Avin. Success in that ev*ent does not entail a rehandicap, of course. Vertigern finished third in the Thompson Handicap at Trentham last month and then Avent on to Avin the Awapuni Gold Cup. However, his opposition at Ellerslie Avill be something solid, more so than in the Wellington race. Bright Glow on recent form is nicely in AA-ith 8.11, and as this is her pet distance she is going to take some heading. If the going is soft her chances Avill be improved. Great Charter and Silvermine are two speedy horses and a distinct preference is giA r en to Silvermine, Avho was second to The Swell at Awapuni last monili. Mervette and Paitonu Avill be strongly fancied, and White Fang and Ceremony are brilliant AA'hen caught right. Auckland Candidates Then folloAV three solid Auckland gallopers in Royal Doulton, Corinax and Eager Rose. The lastnamed should be the best of this lot, for her last two efforts Avere Avinning ones, and most impressive at that. She AA’ill be at her best distance in the Easter, and her shoAvings at Te Rapa this Aveekend Avill indicate if she has lost her form or not. Corinax is brilliant enough, too, and it is significant that he is not in the President’s Handicap. Goshawk is in Australia now and Prince Val may be hardly class enough for this race, although there A\*as a time Avhen he looked like being good enough to take on the best.

That is what ' * likes: lie is all at sea on wet ground. Kingfiold ran a good race 12 months ago in this event, and of the others on the minimum Gold Money. Prince of Orange, Lucy Rose, Cynthia X. Sj P Archie and Royal Parade have th» best credentials. The following are the horses preferred in the respective divisions as arranged in the handicaps: Over nine stone: Pegaway and Toxeuma. Over 7.13: Bright Glow, Silvermine, Mervette and Paitonu. trim, Vali and Hunting Day. On minimum: Gold Money, KingfieM and Cynthia X. This list is still further reduced m the list of half dozen possibilities set out below. Brighton Hurdles The second leg of the double—that is no secret—is the Brighton Hurdl?s, which is a real puzzler, for not many of the jumpers have been seen in action of late. Those that have given indications of not being far below their best at present are King’s Guard, Ibd Fuchsia, Elicit, Pouri, Democratic, Prince Lu. Kawini, The Lamb, Omeo. Glenotus. Star Comet. Glenstar. Karncliameha, Glena Bay, Importer and Airtight. That completes a brief review of the two most popular events to be staged at Ellerslie on Saturday Ayeek. Prime Fancies The following half-dozen horses are selected from each of these races u> possessing the best chances at his juncture, named in the order in which they appear in the handicaps: Easter Handicap Brighton Hurdles TOXEUMA KING’S GUARD SILVERMINE RED FUCHSIA PAITONU POURI EAGER ROSE PRINCE LU VALI KAWINI HUNTING DAY OMEO The acceptances for all first day events are due to close at 5 p.m. on Friday next, and the lists issued thereafter may serA'e to throw some light on the intentions of owners, for several of the horses engaged in the two big events under review claim engagements at other centres.
