WATER IN MILK

VENDOR FINED £5 From Our Own Correspondent WHANGAREI, Monday. In the Whangarei Magistrate’s Court this morning before Mr. G. N. Morris, S.M., E. Sothern was charged with selling milk containing 12 per cent, of water. The police said that the sample taken by the health inspector contained 12 per cent, of water. This was the first occasion that Sothern had been before the court. Counsel for Sothern assured the magistrate that nothing had been wrong with Sothern’s milk on any previous occasion. When it came to Sothern’s knowledge that 12 per cent, of water had been found in the sample of milk he had gone to a farm where a suspected person was employed and got some of his milk. He surprised the man, who admitted that he was responsible for the water being present. This was done in the presence of the inspector. The magistrate accepted the explanation as a reasonable one and said the excuse should save the firm from any loss of business. Sothern was fined £5 and costs £1 0s 9d.
