NEW HUT ON EGMONT
BUILT BY ALPINE CLUB Press Association HAW ERA, Today. The culmination of a month’s sustained effort was reached at the weekend, when the erection of the hut on Fantham’s Peak, Mount Egmont, was completed. Situated at an altitude of 6/138 feet, the hut will provide a lofty rendezvous for ski-ing and general alpine recreation. It has accommodation, with sleeping quarters, for 10 persons. In altitude it is second only to the Tlaast Hut, Mount Cook. The portage of the whole of the materials from Dawson’s Falls, at 3,100 feet, to the site of the hut, was arranged voluntarily by members of the Egmont Alpine Club, at whose suggestion the Egmont Park Board arranged for the erection. The portage has occupied the club members, in their spare time, since November. Mr. L. O. Hooker, president of the club, said today that the hut should ad<3 greatly to the attraction of Mount Egmont. The cost had been approximately £250, but had it been necessary to pay for the portage the outlay would have been about £6OO.
