ROAD TO EAST COAST

WAIKAREMOANA ROUTE The first motor trip from Lake House, Waikaremoana, to Rotorua, was made on Saturday by three men, Mr. D. Cameron, the driver, Air. J. Smith, an official at Lake House, and Mr. A. Mortensen, a Public Works contractor. The car left Lake House at 9 p.m. op Saturday and reached Hopuruahine at midnight, and Rotorua at 7.30 a.m. on Sunday, after an uneventful journey. This road has brought the East Coast much nearer Auckland. The first trip to the lake by car from Rotorua was made about a month ago by Mr. R. E. Champtaloup, touring manager of the Auckland Automobile Association, but at that time the road to Lake House had not been quite finished and was not passable. In commenting upon the trip at that time Mr. Champtaloup said the scenery was some of the best and most varied he had seen in the North Island. At present it should not be attempted by any but the most experienced of motorists carrying full equipment to combat service conditions. As there were many long stretches miles away from any assistance the association issues a warning against the indiscriminate immediate use of the road. A further inspection will be made by the association’s officer before Christmas.
