MONTHLY MEETING OF ALBANY BRANCH The Albany Worafen’s Institute held its monthly meeting on Wednesday last. The president, Mrs. B. Dickson, occupied the chair, and there was a good attendance of members. Mrs. Collins was congratulated on her success as a prize-winner at the Hawke’s Bay Federation’s Show. Leave of absence was granted to the secretary, Miss Potter, for the term of her trip Home, and the members’ best wishes were expressed for an enjoyable trip. It was decided to nominate Mrs. Smith at the forthcoming School Committee election. After the report of the delegates to the biennial meeting of the Federation Council had been given, and the programme arranged for the remainder of the year, afternoon tea was served by Mesdames J. Day and Hunter and Miss Cowley. During the afternoon Mrs. F. E. Powell, C.E., A.M.1.M.E., gave an interesting address on “What Science Has Done for Women,” in the course of which he pointed out how scientific inventions had opened business careers to women as well as reducing the drudgery in the home. He regretted that science had not done more in what was specially woman's sphere, for the rate of maternal mortality was still unduly High. A hearty vote of thanks to the speaker and the singing of the National Anthem concluded the meeting.
