SOUTH CANTERBURY RACES FINE effort by gay crest Special to THE SUN TIMARU, Saturday. The South Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting was concluded today in dull but fine weather. The attendee© was again large, and the track was very fast. The totalisator handled £15,886, making .a total for the two clays of £6.587. compared with .£19,192 for the last two days’ meeting held in Xovetnber. Levels Hurdles Antrim Boy won the Levels Hurdles after occupying a rearward iK>sition ffpriv. Heisier led into the straight, bur. Antrim Boy had little difficulty in passing him over the last furlong. Troilus was a moderate third, and Onflamb did best of the others. MJme hit the second fence with great force and dislodged his rider, L>. Hall, who was sent to hospital and was found to be suffering from a compound fracture of the left leg. Claremont Handicap Colonel Quex, who was bracketed with Jock o’ Hazeldean, ran to the front early in the Claremont Handicap, and after a stirring finish beat Kentish Lady by half a length. Noteworthy. the favourite, had a handy position throughout, but he did not make much impression on either Colonel Quex or Kentish Lady in the run home. Miss Marco and Semper paratus were closest of the remainder. South Canterbury Handicap Topere was favourite for the South Canterbury Handicap, but there also was good money for Buoyant and Taboo. Buoyant made the pace to the home turn from Tardy and Topere, but when straightened up for home Stealth put in his claim. Stealth passed Buoyant inside the distance and went on to win by half a length. Taboo was two lengths farther back third, and then came Topere, Mount Boa, Tardy. Juvenile Handicap Adelphl, with C. Emerson up, was n solid favourite for the Juvenile Handicap. but he was a good thing beaten. He met with trouble from the start, and but for this might have won easily. Sleipner hopped out well and put a break on his field early. He was well clear at the bend, and holding liis advantage over the last furlong beat Ball Dress by three lengths. Adelphi was a nose away third, just ahead of Pink Paper. Opihi Handicap Jessie Huon won the Opihi Trot well from Hakari and Le Thorpe. Pink ran a gvod race into fourth place, while Gracille, the favourite, lost her chance by breaking up at the start* Trial Handicap Punchestown ran into all kinds of trouble in the Trial Handicap, but he finished brilliantly in the straight to beat Valuator by two lengths. Solinuri was a length away third, and Taragona fourth. Kingsdown Handicap Gay Crest, added to his reputation by winning the Kingsdown Handicap under 9.9, after conceding the leaders a good start with four furlongs to go. Fair Exchange led into the straight lrom Courtlike and Straightcourse, but at the distance Gay Crest put in a good run. Gay Crest joined Straightcourse 100 yards from home, and in a punishing finish Gay Crest did best to win by a neck. Fair Exchange was half a length farther back third, and Courtlike was next. Farewell Handicap Gay Sonnet won the Farewell Handicap after a sterling struggle with Arch Arrow and First Raid. Arrowmir, the favourite, missed the junipout, and though he chased the field ho made no impression on the leaders in the straight.
