RUNNING BLIND

7 RESPITE the fact that Refresher dwelt on the mark in the sprint at Whangarei on Saturday, it appeared as if Branson were really the unlucky Horse in the race. He was beginning to make up his ground approaching the home turn, but then L. Tierney, the jockey, was blinded by a tuft of turf which caught him in an eye. From this out Branson ran his

race alone, for Tierney was helpless. So Branson, on his own came along with his typical finish, and he squeezed up between Refresher and White Ringlet to get second to the former. Under the cir-

cumstances Branson's performance was a splendid one. Tierney was sent to hospital to have the injured eye attended to. Two races later the Ellerslie light-weight, W. H. Jones, also received an injury to an eye through a piece of turf flying up. He received first aid treatment, and it is believed that the injury in his case is not serious.
