ROTORUA NOTES
Major Cowper made the first landing, on the new airplane area, but it was purely a sporting venture, as clearing has as yet been only superficial. How he can rise again is a auestion for speculation. Mr. A. W. Downer, secretary of the local executive of the obstetrical appeal fund, states that total subscriptions amount to £223 Is. Deer are playing havoc with the root crops in the vicinity of the Guthrie Settlement, their presence creating a problem, as hitherto they have remained in the forest areas to the eastward. The rising plantations of the Perpetual Forestry Co. are also suffering from- their depredations. Many well-known airmen will be in Rotorua for the great aerial pageant, which is to take place during the Easter holidays. A great novelty programme has been arranged by the Borough Council. The children of the primary schools of the district had an enjoyable'day on Friday when their annual sports were held in the Government Grounds. Owing to the varying number of pupils attending schools a system of points was arranged, by which schools of under 50 attendances could have an equal chance with the bigger schools. The children competed entirely for tl-e glory of their school, the only prize being the coveted banner, which went to the school with the greatest aggregate of points. After the day’s fun it was found that Whakarewarewa Native School had gained the banner. Points were as follow: Whakarewarewa, 4S; Convent, 40: Rotorua, 33: Rotokawa, 28: Ngongotaha, 26; Whangamarino, 14. Over 600 children competed.
