Saunders writes a sorry scrawl, A scrawl that looks terrific, A kind of crude cuneiform Or scrambled hieroglyphic. Harmon’s graceful characters Have a soft and subtle shading. Which he, a struggling shipping clerk, Wastes on bills of lading. Saunders’ signature looks like The laundry marks on collars— But any bank will honour it For twenty million dollars!
