FUNDS FOR SCHOOLS
CARNIVAL AT PONSONBY
A successful combined carnival was held yesterday in the grounds of tho Curran Street School. Ponsonby, in aid of funds for tho maintenance of tho dental clinic and for instruction in swimming at tho four schools under the Ponsonby Schools’ Committee. A sum of £IOO was raised.
The carnival, which was attended by parents and pupils of the schools concerned—Richmond Road, Ponsonby, Bayfield and Curran Street—was opened by Mr. M. ,T. Savage, M.P. for Auckland West. The chairman of the schools* committee, Mr. R. A. Rew, said it was hoped to make the carnival an annual one, making unnecessary an appeal to parents for funds. Splendid assistance had been given by the staffs of the various schools. The object was a worthy one, the dental clinic serving all four schools and daily instruction being given throughout the summer by a qualified swimming instructor.
Five hundred children took part in the fancy dress parade, many costumes showing originality in their striking designs. Competitions and carnival events were held, including a decorated vehicles’ competition, overhead and tunnel ball events and tugs-o’-war. A “sack** football match and an exhibition of blindfold boxing created much amusement. Tho award for the best costume went to Ponsonby School, Bayfield being second. The decorated vehicles’ section was won by Bayfield, with Curran Street second.
The pupils also gave an exhibition r»f country dancing and of a new series of physical drill exercises recently adopted.
