TRANSFER OF DETECTIVE FROM WHARVES “RETROGRADE STEP” , T hat * retrograde step has been t * ie Police Department in withdrawing Detective-Sergeant McHugh from the Auckland wharves without a replacement being made is the opinion of the Port of Auckland Shipping and Stevedores' Association. In a letter to the police, the association states that the position is now serious, as a detective with a knowledge of the waterfront is necessary. ■A\ e consider this port as one of tinmain gateways to New Zealand.” the letter states. “To remove a guard therefrom is a retrograde and dangerous step. We would, therefore, be glad if you could see your way to arrange for a competent replacement as soon as possible. The Chamber of Commerce also regards the position as serious. It is maintained that the presence of detectives would have a salutarv effect In preventing as well as detecting crime. No good reason had been disclosed for withdrawing the detectivesergeant from service on the wharves ana transferring him to the Central Station.
