BOROUGH’S FINANCES

POSITION AT TAKAPUNA REVIEW BY TOWN CLERK Special thanks to the borough staff for its ability to supply full details of the transactions of the past financial year within two days of its close was tendered by the Takapuna Borough Council last evening. j A detailed statement submitted showed that the borough finances - were in good condition. The debit balance of the district fund account had been reduced by £59, it now standing at £2,554. The debit balance of the general account stood at £4,490, this being £435 less than at this time last year. To this sum has to be added £549, being the amount that will be refunded when the Marine Terrace loan is actually raised. In view of the fact that the unemployment relief work of last winter cost the general account approximately £ 4,486, this position is considered to be most satisfactory. The refuse account carried a credit balance of £250, although Northcote’s quota of the operating costs of the combined destructor, £157, had not yet been paid. The credit balance of the water supply account at the beginning of the year, £392, had been red iced to £215 at its close. The interest account credit balance now stands at £970, an increase of £6*9 since this tiino last year. This means that in the coming year £2,117 only w'ill have to be found for interest on the £119,000 drainage loan, to meet an actual charge of £3,087. Unexpended balances of loan accounts are as follow: Sewerage loan of £106,000 (£4,980); street works loan of £21,000, (£2,921); sewerage loan of £ 119.000 (£11,728). The statement also dealt with rate collections and arrears. The consolidated rate struck was £43,475, of which £35,993 had been collected After making allowance for discounts and rates remitted, the percentage collected was 85.19. The amount of outstanding rates at the year’s commencement was £13,257. Of this amount, £9,412 had been recovered by March 31, this being nearly £3,000 in excess of the amount estimated under this heading when the borough budget had been prepared.
