GIRL ABDUCTED
SEIZED IN FULL VIEW OF CONSTABLE MELBOURNE SENSATION In lull view of Constable Wear, a girl aged about IS years, was abducted while she was standing on the footpath in Sydney Road, near the Haymarket, Melbourne, recently. Constable Wear, who was too far away to interfere, saw a man leap from a motor-car while his companion kept it moving, seize the girl, and push her into the front seat. The
car then dashed away with all it lights out.
AVear saw the giyl walk along the street and stand on the footpath outside the Haymarket. She was apparently waiting for someone. He walked past her up Sydney Road, but obtained only a fleetiug glimpse of her face. The street lighting at this point is poor, and he is unable to give any description of her appearance. On the corner of Grattan Street and Sydney Road he halted. After standing there for a few seconds he looked back. The girl was still standing on the edge of the footpath. As he was looking back a black doubleseated sedan car drove along Sydney Road from the direction of the city. A man was at the wheel and another was beside him.
As it neared the point where the? girl was standing, the car slowed up but did not stop, and the driver’s companion jumped out. Constable Wear saw him spring at the girl, who screamed twice. After that she was silent, as though she had been struck and knocked unconscious, or a hand had been placed over her mouth. Her assailant then bundled her into the car, which was moving slowly near the kerb. Immediately all its lights were switched out, and it drove away from the city along Sydney Road, passing Wear at a furious rate. ITe was not able to see its registration number. The whole incident occupied only a few seconds.
