Mr. Dickson Goes To Reform Ballot

PARNELL BY-ELECTION LABOUR OPENS BATTLE Contrary to his previous intention to contest the Parnell seat at the forthcoming by-election regardless of any other Reform nomination, Mr. J. S. Dickson has now forwarded his nomination to the party’s headquarters. His name will go with others before the delegates who are to choose the official Reform candidate. In a statement made yesterday, Mr. Dickson explained that he had given the situation very serious attention and while he felt that he must give the utmost consideration to his large body of supporters, who desired him to stand in any event, he could not overlook the duty to his party, which he had represented in Parliament as a member for the electorate for 17 years and for nine as chief whip. He had come to the definite conclusion that it was his duty to the party and to the electors of Parnell to submit his name for selection as the official Reform candidate, and to abide by the result as provided by the party’s constitution. , The Reform nominations were to close at four o’clock this afternoon, and this evening the 21 groups into which the members of the party have been divided will hold meetings to appoint delegates for the conference which will select the official candidate. The group meeting places are advertised ifi this issue. For Group 17, which is the area bounded by Remuera Road, Armidale Road, Market Road and Cornwall Park Road, and Group 18, which is the area bounded by Remuera Road, Market Road, Great South Road and Manukau Road, a joint meeting will be held at 77 Remuera Road. The Labour Party will open its campaign this evening, when Mr. W. J. Jordan. M.P. for Manukau. will speak at Kohimarama. Mr. T. Blood worth, Labour’s official candidate, who went to Wellington on Monday to attend a meeting of the Worfkers* Compensation Committee, has arrived back in Auckland.
