“A SONG OF KENTUCKY” Lois Moran portrays the leading feminine role In “A Song of Kentucky,* Fox romantic comedy drama which is at the Civic Theatre. The featured male role is enacted by Joe Wagstaff, who made a name for himself in New York musical comedy. Dorothy Burgess heads the supporting cast, which also includes Douglas Gilmore, I-ledda Hopper, Herman Bing and Edwards Davis. One of the most interesting and thrilling backgrounds in the production is the actual running of the Kentucky Derby of 1929. The remainder of the programme at the Civic includes both musical tions and shorter talkies. Ted Henkel and his famous Civic Symphony Orchestra play a potpourri of favourite melodies and Fred Scholl at the Civic Grand Organ plays “Love’s Happiness” (Kreisler), and an amusing feature entitled “Civic Rumours.” Among the talkie featuret-tes there is a sound cartoon, two gazettes, a talking comedy. and a singing number featuring J. Harold Murray (of “Married in Hollywood” fame), entitled “Serenade.” New heights in the field of romance and adventure are reached in “The Lone Star Ranger,” • Zane Grey’s first talking picture,, which begins at the Civic Theatre next Saturday. A talented cast, headed by George O’Brien and Sue Carol, present this stirring melodrama of the south-west dealing with the Texas Rangers. O’Brien, one of the most popular men of the talking screen, portrays the character of Buck Duane, an outlaw by force of circumstance, who eventually joins the Texas Rangers and becomes a dominant factor in breaking up a gang of cattle rustlers.
