TAMBOURINE AND ARCHEEN SCORE OPENING OF WHANGAREI MEETING Special to THE SIX WHANGAREI, Today. The weather was showery prior to tho opening of the Whangarei Raring Club's meeting at Kensington Park today, but continued fine during the racing. The track was soft. Maori Boy, top-weight in the McInnes Memorial Handicap, won that event front Envoy and Nassock, the winner being favourite and the second horse at liberal odds. TRIAL STAKES Of £100; 5 fur. Five declined their engagement in the Trial Stakes, and in an even betting pool between the favoured pair, Xorval Tea £269 had only a slight cali over Principal £254, with anything else at a good price. Biddy’s Comet’s figures were £136, making her fourth in the order of betting. At the start Bold Archer, Mineral, Stimulant and Trustee were badly left, and Xorval Tea was the lirst to show out, and at the end of a furlong she was leading Tasty, Waimuri, Principal, Gay Idea, Wild Country, Biddy Comet and Valorient. Passing across the top and into the straight the leader was still clear of Waimuri, Wild Country, Principal, Tasty, Alpina, Biddy Comet and Valorient in that order, and in the run home the favourite hung on splendidly, to win by two lengths from Biddy Comet, who finished well, a similar distance ahead of Tasty. Principal, who was well placed, but failed to make any impression on the leaders, was fourth, and then came Stimulant, Valorient, Waimuri, Gay Idea, Wild Country and Alpina. On Top did not get away well, and it was left to Furore to make the early’ running from Maurea, Tambourine, Mauriaena, Irish Court, Royal Lover and Treasury, but going down tho back the last-named began to come through smartly and was soon in behind Furore, the pair being attended by Mauriaena, Tambourine, On Top, Royal Lover and Irish Court. At the top Treasury deposed Furore and they W’ere followed into the home stretch by On Top, Tambourine,. Mauriaena, Roval Lover, Irish Court and Diamond Queen. With the pressure on Tambourine responded gamely and went on to beat Treasury by two lengths, with Mauriaena a length back in third place. Down the back stretch Arclieen was still making play from a bunch comprised of Marita, Negress, Respirator and Quincoma. and half a mile from homo Quincoma begun to make a forward move, with the result that iie and Arch eon jumped the last fence together, the latter doing best in the run home, to win by a length. It was a bad start, Scat and Tanagra receiving all the worst of it. while White Ringlet went to the front early from British King, Currajong and Refresher. The last-named joined White Ringlet in the van as they came across the top, with British King, Currajong, Tanagra and Scat in attendance, but coming round the home turn White Ringlet fell, and this left Refresher clear of British King, Currajong, Scat and Tanagra. The favourite lasted long enough in the run home to narrowly defeat British King by a head, with Currajong a length and alialf back in third place. Then came Tanagra and Scat.
