RETAIL SALE OF FRUIT
REPLY TO CRITICISMS Press Association 4 WELLINGTON, Tuesday. At a gathering of fruit retailers, the conditions under which fruit and vegetables are marketed were discussed at some length. Several of those present expressed the view that the retailers’ representative who recently interviewed the Hon. G. W. Forbes on the question had no mandate to criticise the markets inspector of the Agricultural Department. The general opinion was that the inspector did his duty as efficiently as possible, and was not responsible for any unsatisfactory features of the present state of affairs. “If anyone is to blame.” said one speaker, “it is the retailers themselves. What is wanted is closer cooperation between the retailers and the inspector.” It was considered that potatoes, cabbages and cauliflowers should be graded in the same way as apples.
