TRAMS TO ROSKILL
CONCRETE LOAN DELAYED TERMINUS ON MT. ALBERT ROAD Fears that the proposed new tramway from the- Mount Eden terminus to the Three Kings would stop short of Mount Albert Road were allayed by a notification received by the Mount Roskill Road Board last evening from the Transport Board. The board said that the new terminus will be at the intersection of Three Kings and Mount Albert Hoads. This, however, is to be contingent upon the road board reconstructing- that portion of the route between Rewa Avenue and Mount Albert Road, by laying down in permanent material the carriage ways on both sides of the proposed tramway tracks. It is the board’s intention to carry out these improvements on the whole length of Three Kings Road as soon as the sanction of the ratepayers is given to raise the required loan. The acting-chairman, Mr. G. E. Tansley, explained that owing to the prolonged illness of the board’s engineer, Mr. John Dawson, the plans and estimates for concreting Three Kings Road had not yet been submitted to the Local Government Loans Board and consequently it had been found necessary to postpone the date of the poll. Referring- to the Transport Board’s terms for extending the Mount Eden line to Mount Albert Road, Mr. E. A. Pearce contended that the Transport Board had no option but to carry out this work unconditionally. No mention. lie said, had been made in the loan proposals placed before the rate payers of any such conditions as those now being put forward. He held that as no reference had been made to concrete carriage ways in the loan proposals the Transport Board was legally bound to lay the tracks along Three Kings Road irrespective of the condition of its surface. The board decided to take no action at present and formally received the Transport Board’s letter.
