ATTRACTIONS OF THE NORTH
EASTER MOTOR TOURS Mr. J. R. Self, of the A.A.A. staff, who returned last week after accompanying the touring manager of the A.A.A. throughout his inspection of North Auckland districts, expressed surprise at the very excellent roading conditions particularly iu the Far North. This was Mr. Selfs first visit to this district and he had previously held the opinion which is common among hundreds of motorists, that the North was more or less a wilderness. T|ie rich valleys, excellent sheep country and wonderful dairying land were features on which he forecasts a wonderful future for North Auckland. He describes the scenic beauties as having a charm of their own and in an address which he delivered at the A.A.A. rally in the Mangamuka Gorge, slated that once the road connection was completed between Auckland and Whangarei or Dargaville, many thousands of
motorists would take advantage of this ideal touring area. Dr. S. A. Gibbs, president of the j Nelson Automobile Association, who has also returned from a tour of the North, was loud in his praises for the variety and excellence of the various attractions. He was Quite definite that once South Island motorists realised the possibilities of motor touring in thi«,| area, they will leave their usual resorts and travel North in hundreds. A new record for the journey from Melbourne to Adelaide and return was made recently by an Essex tourer, which covered the 1,190 miles with two I drivers in 32h 12m running time and 33h 42m total time. The previous rej cord was 43h 39m.
