Theft Charges Laid Against Secretary

The secretary o£ the Waitomo Power Board was charged in the Magistrate’s Court today that on or about January 20, 1930, being the servant of the Waitomo Power Board, he stole the sum of £73 11s, the property of ' the Waitomo Power Board, i Detective White asked for a remand j till April 9. . ! • Counsel for accused, in asking lor ! bail, said that the charge concerned j the theft of money from the Waitomo Power Board, and had been laid as the result of an audit which was at present being carried out. The accused had given an assurance that he would give the Audit Department every assistance in unravelling matters in connection with the alleged defalcations. Detective White ss.id that he would not oppose hail. There were, however, other charges pending against accused in regard to the Power Board’s funds, and it was understood that they would include an amount of not less than £1,500. An even larger sum might be involved, but this would he decided when the audit of the board’s books was completed. He asked that bail be, substantial, and that the accused should report daily to the police. Bail was allowed in accused’s own recognisance of £SOO, and two other sureties, each of £250.
