PAPATOETOE’S CARNIVAL Arrangements are well advanced for the third and final sports carnival to be held by the Papatoetoe Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, on the Papatoetoe recreation ground on Saturday afternoon. A programme of 39 events has been ! drawn up, and this will bo run off according to the club’s time-table, which allows one minute between the heats, and three minutes for a final. Included in the programme is the halfmile provincial championship of Auckland, for which nine entries have been received, including the best half-mile athletes in the province. In conversation with Mr. W. J. Hindman, president of the club, this morning, a Sun representative was informed that arrangements have been entered into with the Auckland centre whereby the members of the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club will be competing at the meeting. In this section of the programme, 74 nominations have been received, and the public will have the opportunity of wit- | nessing eight of the leading wheelmen in New Zealand in action. The athletic events have attracted 144 nominations, and nominations for school events total 169, making an aggregate of 387 for the meeting, j Tire grounds have be-en receiving special attention, and will be in firstclass order on the day, and with the probability of fine weather, a bumper carnival is assured. OUTBOARD NOTES i The fastest time put up by any out- ! board this season was attained by j Marquette Pug in the Marathon race tc ; Islington Bay held by the outboard division of the New Zealand Powerboat Association last Saturday. This craft average 43 m.p.h. over a distance of eight and a-half miles. tl is considered that Marquette Pug won the event by virtue of the course she steered. The race started off the Parnell jetty on the Mark Foy system, and, clearing the eastern tide deflector, Marquette Pug steered a dead-straight course for Islington Bay entrance, and she rounded the Rangitoto extremity as closely as she could. Other boats swung wide of the straight course to a greater or smaller extent.

The division is endeavouring to arrange races for Easter Saturday, and outboards will probably hold a picnic at Buckland’s Beach before the season ends.
