Thorburn. HAURAKI PLAINS RUGBY From Our Own Correspondent NGATE A, Today. On the present indications it seems that the Hauraki Plains Rugby Union may have to go out of existence owing to lack of interest in the game. A meeting of the members of last year’s union was called for last Thursday evening but only the president, secretary and the delegates from one club attended. For some years the game has been on the decline, mainly because the big construction gangs having gone, nonq*»of the clubs had sufficient members. None of the clubs were agreeable to go out of existence and the union, comprising as it did two representatives of each affiliated club, was not strong enough to take a definite stand in the matter. The result has been that clubs have fielded teams which were numerically weak and much below their nominated grade. So far this season only one club has had its annual. meeting, and in the other districts there appears to be sucii a shortage of players and persons sufficiently interested to take up the organisation of the clubs, that it may happen that the clubs will go out of existence without a fight. The annual general meeting of the Rugby Union is to be held next Thursday evening, and the president will bring forward a proposal to form two senior grade teams the members of which will be worthy of that grading. Under the proposal the clubs will continue as before to field as many teams as possible and the usual inter-club competitions will be held, the only difference being that the best club teams will not be termed seniors in grade. The two senior teams will have matches arranged for them against senior grade teams from other unions and will play each other three times during the season for the Dent Cup.
