PARNELL BY-ELECTION
LABOUR MAY ANNOUNCE CANDIDATE FIRST UNITED’S NOMINATION As yet, none of the parties concerned has definitely selected its candidate for the Parnell by-election, hut it appears that the first official announcement of a candidate will come from the Labour Party. The Labour nominations yesterday afternoon, and the names were immediately forwarded to Wellington, where the executive of the party will make a selection. An announcement concerning the choice is expected tomorrow. Of the other two parties, there is no date fixed for the announcement of candidates. There is a possibility that Reform will announce its choice before next week, while the United organisation, which is holding regular meetings, expects to be in readiness to make an announcement next Thursday. Having signed the form binding him to abide by the decision of the delegates’ conference, Mr. H. R. Jenkins has now taken the formal steps involved in placing his nomination at the disposal of the Reform Party organisation. His nomination for selection as the candidate was received at the party’s headquarters yesterday. The one other nomination paper accepted by this party is that from Mr. R. Glover-Clark, while Mr. A. J. Burrows has been accredited to the party, and his nomination paper is expected to be handed in this afternoon. - The United Party’s first nomination was announced yesterday, when Mr. W. C. Hewitt agreed to submit his name for selection, contrary to his announcement made last week that he would contest the seat as a Liberal-Labour candidate.
ELECTION DATE NOT FIXED ENROLLING OF ELECTORS The date of the Parnell by-election will not be known until the writ is issued, but this is expected at the end of this week and it is probable that the election will take place about three weeks later.
Party organisations are now busily engaged enrolling those who are entitled to vote. Enrolment can only be claimed in a district yherein the elector has his usual place of abode, and not in a district in which he has only property or business interests. According to the regulations any person who makes a false declaration is liable to a fine of £2O, or imprisonment for three months. A person who signs an enrolment form for another may be fined £SO. The responsibility resting on those who undertake to attend to enrolment formalities for others is indicated in a provision that a person who fails to deliver a claim for enrolment to the registrar is liable to a fine of £2O, or three months in gaol. A total of 14,067 electors was on the Parnell main and supplementary rolls at the time of the last general election in 1928. Since then 2,890 names have been deleted and 1,059 new enrolments have been made. It appears, therefore, that a number of residents who are qualified to vote have yet to enroll. No change in the boundaries has occurred since the general election.
