WELCOME TO BISHOP
CHILDREN GATHER AT SACRED HEART FIRST OFFICIAL VISIT Catholic pupils of the Ponsonby schools gave a warm welcome to Dr. J. M. Liston, Homan Catholic Bishop of Auckland, when he visited Sacred Heart College in Richmond Hoad this morning. This was his first official visit since his installation in office. When Dr. Eiston arrived move than 1.000 children from the various schools of the district, including about 330 from tho college itself, were ranged on the lawn behind the buildings. He was welcomed by the Rev. Brother Benignus. director of the college, who referred to 'the Bishop’s work for the schools. Speeches of welcome were also given by Rupert Cuddon-Large, a senior student, on behalf of the boys, and by Miss E. Cork, of St. Mary’s College, who represented the girls. The proud record of the Catholic Church was referred to by Dr. Liston, who impressed on the scholars the work of past generations. They would never have need to apologise for their religion, said tho JSishop. Ho spoke also of the importance of equipping themselves correctly l’or life, stressing tho need of truth, honesty and courtesy, as well as ambition of the correct type. The Bishop, in leading three cheers for the instructors, who are doing valuable work, announced that classes would be suspended for the remainder of the day. The welcome was closed with the singing of “God Defend Xew Zealand.”
