PARTIES NOT AGREED ON COAL DISPUTE CONFERENCE FAILS United P.A.—By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, Sunday. Another conference between the coalmine owners and the miners was* held yesterday. High hopes of an early resumption of work in the mines had been built upon it. However, the delegates were unable to agree after two hours’ consideration of the situation though some progress was made, it is believed. The Prime Minister, Mr. J. H. Scullin, who had called the conference and was present, made it plain that financial assistance from the Federal Government was out of the question, but he said that some form of. tariff protection against coal imports might be possible. The Commonwealth would co-operate in plans for the stabilisation of the industry and in finding employment for | surplus miners.
