“THIS CUPID BUSINESS”

MAYOR CLOSES DOWN ON MARRIAGE BUREAU THOUSANDS OF LETTERS Reed. 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Friday. The Mayor of Southend called yesterday in desperation and closed the matrimonial bureau which received more than 200 letters today. “This business is beyond us. It must stop,” he said. “I did not realise there were so many people in the world wishing to be married. “I have definitely finished this cupid business, as I am frightened of the consequences. A bonfire will be made of thousands of letters.” A Glasgow man wrote and said he would like to get fixed up, because he was already £2l-in debt. Prior to this the Mayor, in a sympathetic moment, promised to help John Sinclair, an unemployed man of Halifax, to find a wife who would give him work. Hundreds of women offered. Hundreds of other unemployed men wrote to the Mayor expressing their willingness to wed the remainder of the women.
