S.M. ASSAULTED
WENT TO SEPARATE ! FIGHTING DOGS SCENE IN PATEA STREET Press Association HAWERA, Today. While proceeding to separate two dogs which were lighting in a Patea street on Friday, Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., was assaulted by the owner of one of the dogs, Maui Onekura, who as a result was fined £5 today by Justices of the peace in the Patea court on a charge of assault; together with an additional £5 on a charge of urging the dogs to fight. It was urged by Constable Kelly that; the case was not one of an ordinary clog fight. The animals had b§en fighting for some time, and though they were distressed they were being* urged to continue when Mr. Salmon arrived. Actuated by humanitarian motives Mr. Salmon was proceeding to separate the combatants when he was thrown roughly aside by the accused, w ; ho was one of a considerable crowd, and who continued to urge the dogs to light. Mr. Salmon personally escorted the accused on his way to the police station, till they were met by a con- ] (stable.
