Horses Which Are Pleasing On the Tracks

Te Aroha Contingent To Race Shortly THURSDAY’S TRAINING Special to THE SUN TE AROHA, Saturday. ! Training operations on the local | course will be considerably hampered j during the next three weeks on acI count of the course formation contract | work now being in full swing. At present 20 workers, two motor-lorries, ! four drays, a tractor, and a scoop are | carrying out the work. J Aijcheen is to be taken to Whangarei { next week, where he may get on the winning list. His condition speaks well for his trainer, G. Reed, and the new owner should recoup his purchase money in quick time. While trainer M. Lipsey is away at Opotiki, Grand Arch has been having an easy time of it. He has. however, joined the track workers again. Lipsey took Taurimu to Opotiki, where he ran a second. He has not been in .work long, so h is’ connections were quite satisfied with his showing. Last year Town Bird won two events at the Bay of Plenty meeting, and evidently his owner expected him to do likewise this season. In the Greerton Handicap he was allowed to go too fast in the first half, and naturally stopped in the straight. But in the six-furlongs Plying Handicap he was steadied round

the home turn by Chandler, and coming away again, was not caught. I-Ie is not engaged at the Waikato meeting, the date of nominations having been overlooked. It may not be long before Town Bird is competing in hurdle races, because he is a really fine jumper. Kept for Next Season R. I-lines intends to winter his three two-year-olds King Win, Balfour, and Art Gallery. The latter injured her hind legs this week, but was immediately attended to, and will soon be right again. White Ringlet is being kept in nice condition by trainer C. R. Wallace, and ran a first and a third at Opotiki! Properly placed, the little Some. Boy 11. mare will increase her winning total very soon. G. A. Reid has Vais tree t on the upgrade, and the Valkyrian representative may soon justify the change of training location. If he can be brought to get away quickly from the barrier, he should win sprint events. J. H. Wallace’s Sir Russell looks bigger and more robust than usual, and may have to be reckoned with at the A\aikato fixture. Steady track work seems to suit him, lie runs well when fresh. He h® s been quite a satisfactory stake-earner this season, and further successes may be in store for him. „ The Shanibles and Lapidary fillies in br. A. Reid s stable will not be required to do any strenuous track work for some time. Botk are looking well, and as two-year-olds next season may make names for themselves. Marble King is once more on the easy list, but is probably intended for winter racing, as he gallops well in heavy going. Antique's Rise to Fame It is not easy to prophesy when Antique will again strike winning condition, because he had a setback by being asked to race in open company at tho Auckland and Welllington summer meetings. He has only been set light tasks on the training ground and appears to have freshened up. He is to race at Te Rapa next month. Lucky Alice, also in J. H. Wallace’s team, has at last commenced to thicken out, and it is probable that at four years her running may show a decided improvement upon that of the current term. There is no fitter horse at present than Glenstar. Were he a more accomplished jumper, he could bo reckoned on to win his full share of hurdle races. Ho will be competing at the Waikato meeting, and as he will be schooled a few times before then, he cannot be left out of calculations. The two-year-old Gold Day is furnishing nicely, and at the same time his track showings are of a meritori°us nature. At the end of his gallops ho is finishing strongly, and it is quite on the cards that the Day Comet gelding may develop into a stayer. In his action lie takes after his dam, Poi. I-Ie will be produced in nice condition at Te Rapa next month by trainer J F. Eva. Before breakfast on Thursday, A. E. Cox gave his team serviceable work. So far as appearances go, Black Maire, Miss Albyn, Crown Arch, Indolent, The Lamb, and Glenison bear a welltrained look. This stable has not had a good run so far this season, but it is a long lane that has no turning, and better luck may loom up before long. Glenstar was sent a couple of rounds at about half-pace, and Va[street scampered over the last two furlongs of a round. Archeen displayed considerable vim over six furlongs, and is very fit just now. Gold Day, with a light-weight up, got over four furlongs in 50 l-ssec, and Antique covered the same ground in 50sec, and did it convincingly. Lucky Alice was sent a mile at three-quarter pace, and Honiton ran three furlongs in 39sec under a good hold. Volimond, whose condition is now more solid, ran half a mile m olsec, and was going strongly at the end.
