CALLED HIM BLUFF
CONSTABLE HAS LIVELY TIME AT FRANKTON A DIFFICULT ARREST From Our Own Correspondent HAMILTON, Today. When Constable Aitkins was in conversation with a man near the Frankton Ptotel on Saturday afternoon, he was approached by Herman Manner. aged 24. who called him a **• bluff.” and struck him beneath the chin with his fist. The constable tried to arrest Manner, but he resisted violently. Finally, he promised to proceed quietly, but the constable had no sooner released his hold than lie received a further blow from liis captive, who again made a struggle to got free, and called upon friends to assist him. Two of them did so and these were Thomas Bernard Robinson Lawless, aged 20, and Raymond Victor Lawless, aged 25. The constable then called for assistance and two young men came to his aid. A melee followed, but eventually, with the assistance given him, the constable got Magner and his two friends to the Police Station. Before Messrs. W. Seaville and H. .1. Greenslade, J.P.’s, today. Magnet* pleaded guilty to assaulting the constable. resisting arrest and using obscene language. Both the men named Lawless (who. by the way. are not related) were charged with obstructing a constable. Magner was fined £5 for bad language, and £3 for resisting arrest, and lit' was convicted and discharged for the assault. The other two defendants were each fined £2 and costs.
