GOLDEN WEDDING

MR. AND MRS. G. R. GILBERT WELL-KNOWN ONEHUNGA COUPLE Congratulations will.be showered on a well-known Onehunga couple. Mr. and Mrs. G. R. Gilbert, who, on Saturday, celebrate the golden jubilee of their wedding. A Cornish man, Mr. Gilbert was born at Hale on April 11, 1855. At the age of 18 he went to South Africa under engagement with a copper mining company, ar.d seven years later Miss Jordan, eldest daughter of the late Mr. Thomas Jordan of Falmouth, sailed tor South Africa, where she was married to Mr. Gilbert at Port Nolloth on March 29, 1880. . After living 14 years in South Africa, during which Mr. Gilbert was in charge of 90 miles of railway as a stone mason and bridge builder, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert and family sailed for New Zealand on the steamer Tongariro, arriving at Port Chalmers on May 24, 1885. The family came to Auckland, where th<=»v lived ‘for four years, finally settling ir Onehunga, where they have lived for the past 41 years. Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert have been connected with the Methodist Church for over 40 years.and have always taken a keen interest in social affairs of the town. There are four sons and four daughters of the marriage—Mr. T. R. Gilbert, of Onehunga; Mr. C. R. Gilbert, of Onehunga (Superintendent of the Onehunga Fire Brigade): Mr. J. R. Gilbert, of Dargaville: Mr A. R. Gilbert, of New Plymouth: Mrs. A. Mawkes. of Onehunga; Mrs. S. Ackeroyd, of Whakatane; Mrs. G. Wilding, of Whangarei; and Mrs. E. Irwin, of Onehunga.There are 24 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. A reunion of relatives and friends is to be held on Saturday.
