STILL NO ACTION

FINDINGS IN MAORIS AND ASIATICS QUESTION ASSOCIATION’S ACTIVITIES Reference to the delayed action after the findings of the commission inquiring into Maori-Asiatic miscegenation was made in the report presented at the annual meeting of the Akarana Maori Association last evening. The hope was expressed that the Government would shortly take action to enforce the recommendations of the commission. Successful activities in the third year of the association’s existence were reported. On the representations of the association several mutilated placenames had been corrected, and Maori names substituted for English. The membership had increased, and there was a credit balance. Mr. George Graham, in moving the adoption of the report, mentioned the success of the association in its efforts to have the anomaly in the treatment of European and Maori applicants by the Pensions Department removed. Mr. Graham thought the Government should again be urged to remove injustices resulting in the landlessness of many young natives, while thousands of acres of land, confiscated by the Crown from certain Maoris after tho Waikato wars, were lying unused. Improved arrangements were also required at the Waipapa Maori Hostelry, Gittos Street.

The officers elected were: Patron, Dr. Peter H. Buck (Te Rangihiroa), of Honolulu; president, Bishop F. A. Bennett, of Aotearoa; vice-presidents. Sir Apirana T. M.F., Dr. E. R. Ellis - don, director of Maori hygiene, Sir Maui Pomare, M.P., the Rev. W. Panapa, Messrs. Tau Henare, M.P., Tuiti Makitanara, M.P., and Louis TV\ Parore; chairman. Bennett, Maeva Kaihau, and M Cpolceg
