LABOUR CANDIDATES

MR. TOM BLOOD WORTH WILLING TO STAND

MR. SAVAGE AS ORGANISER Mr. T. Bloodworth’s decision to consent to nomination for selection as the official Labour candidate is another interesting development in t.he Parnell byelection. Mr. J. W. Yarnall, who was the Labour candidate in Parnell at the I last General Election, has also an- j nounced that he is an aspirant for official endorsement, but it is thought that the claims of Mr. Bloodworth will prove stronger with the National Executive, to whom the names of the \ candidates will be submitted. In 1919 Mr. Bloodworth contested ; the Parnell seat in I.abour interests. | The voting then was:—Mr. J. S. Dick-' son (Reform), 5,706; Mr. T. Blood- j worth (Labour), 2,287-; Mrs. R. L. ! Baume (Liberal), 1,026. Although '' that was the only occasion on which! Mr. Bloodworth has stood for Parlia- j ment he has for many years been ; prominent in local politics. A meeting of the Labour Represen tation Committee was held last even-1 ing, when the recommendation of the ! executive to call for nominations for candidates from all branches and affiliated unions was endorsed. Nominations will close at 4 p.m. next Monday. Mr. M. J. Savage, M.P., DeputyLeader of the Parliamentary Labour Party, was appointed organiser of the Labour campaign. Mr. Savage states that the nominations would be forwarded to the National Executive in Wellington to select the official candidate, this being provided for under the constitution when time is too short to permit of the usual ballot being taken. Labour Party officials report that organisation arrangements are well in hand. With Mr. Savage, who successfully organised for Mr. H. G. R. Mason in Auckland Suburbs at the last General Election, as organiser, party supporters are confident that the full fighting strength of the party will be marshalled. It is stated that offers of assistance have been received from many of the Labour members, including Mr. Walter Nash, general secretary of the Labour Party, who recently won the Hutt seat for the party. In accordance with the party rules. Labour officials will not make any announcement in regard to the nom-

inations received or expected, the practice being to announce only the: name of the successful nominee. REFORM BALLOT MR. DICKSON'S POSITION Up till this morning Mr. J. S. Dickson, Reform member for Parnell from 1911 to 1928, had not come to any definite decision in regard to the Reform ballot for the selection of an official candidate. Mr. Dickson states that he has been approached by a number of people who want him to stand in any case, 1 and by many who want him to consent to go to the selection ballot. At the present time Mr. A. J. Busrows has submitted his nominations, and Mr. H. R. Jenkins has intimated his willingness to be bound to the constitution of the Reform Party. LABOUR NOMINATIONS Nominations for the official Labour candidate for Parnell will close on Monday, March 31. The Labour Party has issue*! a notice to all branches and unions affiliated to the Labour Representation Committee, notifying them of the closing date.
