Turf Note
Name Claimed The connections of Peach Brandy— Omana colt have registered the name Stimulant for the two-year-old. He Is owned by Mr. F. W. Stonex, and trained at Ellerslie by W. Gall. Strephon Still Doing Well “That all Is well with S. H. Darlings string is evident from the regularity with which the names of Strephon IT.. Ballyferis and company appear in these columns,” says “Sporting Life” of February 6. Ballyferis was the Irish champion two-year-old. He is claimed to be the best colt seen in Ireland for years. He is regarded as a Derby proposition. There is no doubt plenty of the right class material in the stable to test Strephon thoroughly. Ha s Improved, No Doubt Of the many performers of less than average merit that have been unloaded on to West Australians of recent years, not one has improved more than Prince Paladin. Probably the ex-Trentham-trained gelding, like the majority of the stock of his sire, needed plenty of time. From recent advices it would seem that he Is now one of the best gallopers in the Western State. Recently, with 9.7. he cleared out from his opponents in an open sprint, running the six furlongs in 1.12, a fifth of a second better than the State record. Sires' Winnings To date this season Some Boy II 's progeny have won £5.705, while Balboa’s stock have accounted for £ 3.955. Meadow Lark’s Sire During the current season the progeny of the Auckland sire Songbird, have won over £2,432 in stake money, principally through the brilliant form of Meadow Lurk. Out for a Spell John Bradbury, who was to be tried as a hurdler, has had to bo turned otit owing to one of his legs filling badly. Melbourne Horses for Sydney "They've got First Arrow one of the favourites for the Doncaster, but I don t know whether he is going to Sydney.” said Lou. Robertson, trainer of the imported gelding, last week in Melbourne. First Arrow was backed for both the Futurity Stakes and the Newmarket. Ho failed in both, but his form was promising enough to suggest possibilities in the future. The gelding ran a close fourth in the Newmarket with 7.3. He has 7.5 in the Doncaster. Robertson lias no liking for Sydney at this time of the year; hut, of course, if the owner of First Arrow (Mr. A. P. Wade) desires the gelding to run at Randwick. his trainer will take him. C. T. Godb.v is to take a team of five horses to Randwick. Uriah Keep, who is engaged in the A.J.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes, is to be one, and Godby will also take the steeplechaser Romeo for Mr. Wallace Mitchell, who owns Uriah Heep. As Dominant has now struck form, lie will probably be taken also. He is engaged in the Doncaster Handicap. Riding Arrangements As yet, few of the leading jockeys have made any arrangements for the big autumn events at Randwick at Faster, but the chances are J. Pike will again be on Phar Lap in the St. Leger and Amounis in his weight-for-ace engagements. W. Cook has been offered the ride on C’ruois, whom he piloted to victory in last year’s Cup, and probably ho will accept. M. MeCarten will no doubt be on George I rice s elect In the Doncaster, and he ooeUt almost make Tidal's weight *7.1..) in the Cup at a pinch.
