PREFERENCE ON SUGAR
SNOWDEN URGED TO KEEP DUTIES UP A CAUTIOUS REPLY Reed. 12.20 p.m. LONDON, Wed. A deputation representing the Empire’s sugar industry urged on Mr. Philip Snowden the importance of maintaining preferences. Mr. L. M. S. Amery, introducing the deputation, said a withdrawal of the preference would virtually extinguish colonial production, and almost cause disaster in the Dominions. Queensland’s development would be brought to a standstill. Mr. Snowden replied that the Government viewpoint had been made clear. It would maintain preference while the duty remained, but was not prepared to continue the duty in order to give preference. He appreciated the industry’s serious position, but he was not prepared to anticipate the Budget or to make a promise » garding it.
