POISONED MEAT

PARCEL ON ROADSIDE CHARGE AGAINST RESIDENT From Our Own Correspondent PUKEKOHE, Wednesday. Charged with throwing poisonous meat on a road at Te Kauwhata, Henry Skewes appeared in the Pukekohe Court today. Mr. M. R. Grierson entered a plea of not guilty. A girl named Ruth Giles said that slio observed defendant throw a brownpaper parcel on to the roadside, when passing her father’s house in a horse and trap on tho af tern on of October 29. She walked out to the road, looked at the parcel, but did not inspect it. After milking, lier younger sister informed her that their dog had been poisoned. She was unable to say what caused death. Her mother had a parcel which contained meat covered with crystals. Georgo Giles, farmer, of To Kauwhata, testified as having seen the parcel brought in from the roadside by his small daughter. He concluded that the dog had been poisoned. Kenneth Griffin, Government analyst, stated that an analysis revealed that the meat had been covered with strychnine crystals. An adjournment, in order to secure the testimony of Mrs. Giles and her daughter, applied for by Sergeant J. T. Cowan, was opposed by Mr. Grierson. Tho magistrate, Mr. F. H. Levien, adjourned the case until April 9.
