“DOSS-HOUSE” NECESSARY
CITY MISSION’S PREPARATIONS In the opinion of the Rev. Jasper Calder, Aliglican City Missioner, a “doss house” night shelter for homeless men will be necessary again this winter, and preliminary arrangements are now well in hand for filling the need. Mr. Bart Clark, organising secretary of the Mission, has the question in hand, and said this morning that the need for the shelter is already apparent, the number of applications by men for a night’s lodging being greater than at tliis time last year. The various other social organisations must be experiencing the same thing, and it has been decided to secure premises and open the shelter at the same time as last year—the beginning of May. Last year the shelter was under the control of the Auckland City Mission, and was conducted in Federal Street. During its period of service, from May 2 to October 20. no fewer than 16,26*9 free beds and 34.77 S free meals were provided, an achievement only made possible by the generous co-operation of the business and general public. The total amount raised for the shelter was £1.132 Is 3d. made up as follows:—Donations, £555 14s 9d; proceeds of concert by H.M.S. Diomede, £426, 6s 6d (including £2OO subsidy from the Government), and a special Government grant of £l5O. The cost of running the shelter -was £1.105 Is Bd, leaving a balance in hand as a nucleus for this year’s effort of £26 19s 7d. ! Mr. Clark particularly emphasised the generous help received from many quarters in the way of foodstuffs and the great assistance rendered by sympathisers in the running of the shelter.
