Preliminary Review Of Thames Trots
Most Popular Fixture
TUI: annual fixture of the Thames Trotting Club, one of the most popular in the province, will take place on Saturday. No effort has been spared by the management to afford patrons every possible facility to ensure eomfort and enjoyment during the progress of the racing.
More than usual interest will he taken in the form of competitors at ; Thames on Saturday, ;is the great majoritv will be again seen in action the following week-end at Hamilton. Others will also make the trip to j Wanganui, Hawera and New Plymouth, ! and this factor will cause trotting eyes | in those centres to be focussed on the , icings at Thames and later at ClaudeLands. The fields on Saturday will be large and some good racing is anticipated, j
The majority-of runners in each item have been racing more or less prominetly since Christmas, but there are several new-comers of which practically nothing is known publicly. However, a few have good private reputations and if they act accordingly under silk, will add interest to the events they contest. “Abaydos” appends a preliminary survey of the fields. « Hikutaia Handicap There is a big “school’’ on the limit, as usual, and the draw for positions at the post will have something to do with the_prospects of not a few in this department. Eleawah and Prince Pedro are a promising pair of youngsters who will command respect. Oliver Thorpe, Idle Girl, Rosie Thorpe and Roland have racing experience, while
just behind this lot is the consistent Inverness. Lord Lu and Gaza may find the journey too far, but Lady Yvonne and Gold Treasure must be given a chance. Most in demand may be Inverness, Efeawah, Oliver Thorpe, Rosie Thorpe. Kerepeehi Handicap Backers will look for something that can see out the two miles solidly in this heat. Carnui does not appeal, but .there is a suspicion that Marionette will go the distance. Some Dillon may be the best of the front lot, however. Two points back is the sturdy trotter. Paradigm, and he may be just the chap to go with the pacers. Gold Sound knows the Parawai track well and if right Haroto would be a pest. Haerangi Pai has been over the journev prominently, but Dealer looks to hold her safe at the marks. If Hohoro stays on he should be in at finish, but likely j ones are Dealer, Some Dillon, Paradigm and Hohoro. Parawai Handicap Some promising square-gaiters will tackle this mile and a-half go and a useful quartet off the front will he Ivopu Boy, Joy Ride, Nebraska and Nelson Girl. At To Aroha both Kopu and Joy Ride showed up encouragingly, and at Otahuhu Nebraska gave signs of coming to hand in the near future. Nelson Girl may feel the need of a race, ! ,
but she should give a lot of cheek. Of those further back Black Magic will appeal and. providing lie goes away i right, the limit lot will find him worrying them at the business end. The 1 backing will be for Black Magic, Koou ; Boy, Joy Ride and Nebraska.
runri nanoicap T 1 *addl a quandary. Several smart beginners on the front line will keep those at the baek scratching, and Gam. Lord Lu. Roland. Rosie Thorpe. Student Prince, Nathaniel and Zealous will help to make Things interesting The trotter Laekiewood is a great beginner and may be a surprise packet, while Realtv Gold Cast. Childe Audubon. Delavtui Bill and Ursuline are worthy of consideration. There will be a good pool with a leaning perhaps toward Zealous, Gaze. Nathaniel and Realty. Thames Cup There is a fine field engaged for the chief event of the day and it should prove a fine race. By himself, on the front, is Ricliore. and it he moves awav at the signal the others will have the hardest part to do to head him off. Of the lot on the next line Peter Pirate reads best, and on Te Aroha form must
be one to hold very bright prospects. A point further back is Limosa, a real two-miler, and she can be relied upon to make the finish decidedly interesting. Farther back Glandore. T-' Wahia, Warplane, Tony Victor, Explosion and Hal Chimes will add to the excitement of the struggle, but when making their selection backers may vote Peter Pirate, Richore, Limosa and Hal Chimes. Turua Handicap With its tighter limit, the field here is not so unwieldy as in the opening event, but there is excellent interest for a stubborn contest. Off the front line Gold Treasure, Signor, Nathaniel and Zealous are sure to have friends and if the last-mentioned repeats her Hastings run of the first day, the others will find it hard to take the stake from her. Carnui and Some Dillon ate handily placed, while the consistent My Thorpe must be seriously considered. Gold Sound and Dealer look to hold reasonable prospects, but most support may be for Zealous, My Thorpe, Gold Treasure and Signor. President's Handicap Trotters capable of going the twomile course are likely to create a good deal of interest in this event. A trio on the end to cause a lot of annoyance to those behind will be Black Magic, Joy Ride and Kopu Boy. Their form earlier will give backers an idea of
how they should shape In this event. Just behind them is the unbeaten three-year-old Parrish Belle, and in this society she should be well tested. Lady Ena is handy, too, and if at her best would take a power of beating. Lord Haldane only requires to trot away to give the best of his rivals a headache. Preference may be for Parrish Belle, Lord Haldane, Black Magic and Lady Ena. Kopu Handicap A speedy lot claims attention in the final item on the card, and off the front Pavlova must be given a chance, while Great Ballin and Haerenga Pai, if in the right temperament, would make .things interesting. Richore is nicely placed and, failing a penalty, will be in great demand. Trustworthy, Vanity Boy, Glandore and Benefice will go a merry ten furlongs, while Warplane is speedy enough to be troublesome. Nella Dillon cannot have much hope off her mark, but Hal Chimes is one likely to upset calculations. In a good pool the most sought after may be Richore, Trustworthy, Benefice and Ha« Chimes.
