IN THE WEST
CHRISTIE’S BAD LUCK Christie, who used to put the final polish on Mr. Acton-Adams’s horses in New Zealand, is now well established in Western Australia, but bad luck still pursues him. Recently he won a race with Bilt there, but Tholomon, another New Zealander, must have just about broken his heart. Tholomon was second at Goodwood to Autumn Day, his rider’s inability being the deciding factor in a close finish. Then at the same centre he was defeated by a head. At Belmont he was strolling in when he lost his rider at the last fence, and when he eventually came home in first place at Helena Vale he lost the race on protest. Another second at Belmont followed. Era ore was another unlucky charge of Christie’s. Fancied for the Centenary Cup, she collided with another horse while doing her preliminary, and had to be withdrawn from the race, perhaps never to sport silk again. After these reverses, Bilt’s victory was a pleasant surprise, and long overdue luck for the stable.
