RUNAWAY TRAIN
TRUCKS TELESCOPED AND SET AFIRE GUARD’S LUCKY ESCAPE SYDNEY, Monday. Another railway accident occurred on the Blue Mountains. The coupling connecting two trucks on a goods train broke, whereupon nine loaded trucks and the guard’s van ran down a grade near Lawson. They travelled along half a mile of the track and then were thrown off by a safety-catcli attached to a set of points. The guard had a remarkable escape, as his van was precipitated on to a road 12 feet below' the railway line. Live coals from a fire in the van set the woodwork alight. The guard scrambled to safety through k window. Serious damage was done to the trucks, their contents and the track.
