SECRETARY TO BRITISH LEGATION IN GREEK CAPITAL SEEKS NEW ZEALAND NATIVE PLANTS.
SIMILARITY' OF CLIMATES i THEN'S and Auckland . . . the Old - t World and the New. .. . There are points of re- -mblance particularly in climate, between the two cities, and Mr. Shirley Atchley C.M.G., Permanent Secretary to the Legation at Athens, is desirous o{ obtaining New Zealand plants from Auckland gardening enthusiasts that he may transplant them ia Greece In return he will send Greek plants to those who forward New Zealand specimens to him. Mr. Atchley writes to The Sun as follows; British Legation. Athens. Sir.— Mr. W. Pember Reeves has ofterf commented upon the similarity of the Greek and the New Zealand climates' and now Mr. Alan Collard, a. London journalist who is at present in Greece [Mr. Collard lived for a number of years in Auckland. —Ed. The Sun] has suggested to me that some of voor readers may be interested in helping me to acquire some seeds of your native plants which ought to flourish here. It is at his suggestion that lam asking for the courtesy of your columns. I shall be very grateful for small quantities of any New Zealand plants that your readers may be kind enou-h to send ra?; and I shall be glad To send, in return, seeds of am- Greek plants that X can obtain, if desired X understand, for example, that the Capo “silver tree” is fairly plentiful with you and I should be glad to plant it if possible, in some historic spot in Greece. I am also interested in dried specimens ot native New Zealand plants in exchange for which I shall be glad to send specimens of Greek flora.
