OVERSEAS LEAGUE

ENJOYABLE PROGRAMME AT FIRST OPEN EVENING The Overseas League held its first open evening of the year at the new club rooms, Kitchener Street, last evening. The hostesses were Mrs. J. Melville, Miss Kissling, Miss M. Kissling, Mrs. Allen, Miss Gerri, Mr. Bruse, and Mr. Thompson. A very enjoyable programme was arranged by Miss Gerrie; song, Miss A. Clapham; recitation. Miss Thompson: violin solo, Miss D. Higham; song, Mr. McDougall, with violin obbligato by Miss Higham and Dr. Kirkwood’s male quartette, Messrs. McDougal, Telper, Kirkwood, and YVilkinson. Mrs. Bilton and Miss Thompson acted as accom-’ panists. During the interval Mr. F. G. de Guerrier gave an interesting outline of the Overseas League since its inception by Mr. Evelyn YVrench in August, 1910. The league was a non-party society, its aims being to promote the unity of British subjects. The total membership was now 40,000. During the war the league was responsible for the raising of £1,000,000 for the various war funds. The Auckland branch showed considerable energy during the early years of the war in social matters, and was instrumental iii collecting £2,700, with which the airplane Auckland I. was purchased, and presented to the Imperial Airways. Its activities had lapsed for some time, but an enthusiastic committee had increased the membership, and the League was now a live body in the community. Among those present were: Mrs. Barclay, iMiss Quayle, Mrs. GageBrown, Mrs. Newton King, Mrs. F. Fitchett, Mrs. Grant, Mrs. Gore Martin, Miss Gore Martin, Mrs. John Makgill, Miss P. Harty, Miss A. Hartv, Misses Early, Mrs. Laurie, Mrs. Pbllock, Miss M. Chadwick, Mrs. YV. E. Duncan. Miss YValker, Mrs. Harding, Mrs. H. G. Kissling, Mrs. Maunsell, Miss Bell, Misses Westwood, Miss Stewart, Miss Grant, Miss Kennedy, Miss E. Norrie Wilson, Mrs. Reynolds, Miss Daw, Miss Totton. Mrs. King, Miss King, Mrs. H. Morton. Miss Morton, Mrs. F. G. Bilton, Miss Hatfield.
